Understanding grief: workshops to be held in the Central West

2 min read

A series of workshops is being organised for the coming days in the towns of Molong, Eugowra, Parkes and Forbes to explore grief and how to best understand it.

Grief is a natural response to loss, but navigating it, whether personally or as a support system for others, can be deeply challenging.

This is especially so in rural areas, where conservative social values and a traditional regard for stoic self-reliance and “battling on” still predominate.

To help address this, a series of workshops is being organised in coming days for the towns of Molong, Eugowra, Parkes and Forbes to explore grief and how to best understand it.

The half-day get-togethers seek to explore the emotional impact of grief, common grief reactions, some practical strategies for self-care, and advice on how to support someone who is grieving.

Participants will also learn how to have meaningful conversations around grief – what to say and what not to say – recognise when further support may be beneficial, and to develop resilience in their own grief journey or while walking alongside someone who is grieving.

Starting at 9.30am each day and running until lunchtime, there will be a Monday, June 16, event at Parkes Leagues Club, and then a Tuesday, June 17, workshop at Club Forbes. On Monday, June 23, the event will be at Eugowra’s “Fat Parcel” Post Office Room, and the last will be on Tuesday, June 24, at Molong RSL.

The workshops will explain, in a sympathetic and understanding way, how grief is universal, yet deeply personal.

Whether due to bereavement, life transitions or unexpected loss, the grieving process can be complex and unpredictable. This workshop is designed to give individuals, caregivers and volunteers a basic understanding on supporting those who are grieving.

Through guided discussions participants will learn to:

• Understand the different stages and types of grief.

• Learn how to offer meaningful support without unintentionally causing distress.

• Explore self-care strategies for both those grieving and those providing support.

• Gain practical communication tools to navigate grief-related conversations.

By the end of the workshops, attendees should also feel more prepared to approach grief with empathy, sensitivity and the knowledge to help others in their healing journey.

Registration, while free, is essential for catering and resource purposes. Contact the NALAG Centre for Loss & Grief for more information on 6882 9222, email info@nalag.org.au
